Performance-Based Method
This type of assessment refers to assessment methods that directly assess students understanding and proficiency. Since they call for students to apply knowledge and skills rather than simply recall and recognize, performance-based assessments are more likely to reveal student understanding. They are well suited for assessing application of content-specific knowledge, integration of knowledge across subject areas, and life-long competencies such as problem-solving, working collaboratively, and communicating clearly for a purpose.
Evaluation Method for performance-based assessments: Performance-based assessments rely on judgment-based methods to evaluate responses to open-ended prompts or questions. These often take the form of rubrics, checklists, rating scales, etc. This type of evaluation takes time, but the payoff is when students take control of their learning through self-assessment and a focus on quality.
Constructed Response
This method of assessment asks students to create short responses to an open-ended question, problem, or prompt. While constructed-response may seek a correct answer, they are more apt to yield a range of responses. Constructed-response can provide insight into understanding and reasoning when students are asked to show their work and explain or defend their answers in writing.
Assessment Methods:
- Fill in the blank: word, phrase, sentence
- Short answer: sentence or paragraph
- Label a diagram
- "Show your work"
- Visual representation: web, graph, concept map, illustration, etc.
Products
Student generated products provide tangible indicators of application of knowledge and skills. Many people consider this method of assessment to be very authentic because it asks students to create something with their knowledge and skills to accomplish a specific purpose.
