Assessment Standards
In the Michigan Curriculum Framework, one will find seven standards for assessment tasks that are consistent with the vision of good curriculum and instruction captured in the Michigan Content Standards and Benchmarks and the Teaching and Learning Standards. This vision has students engaged in tasks that are authentic and ask students to construct knowledge that has value or meaning beyond schooling.
The seven assessment standards were developed by the Center on Organization and Restructuring of Schools at the University of Wisconsin and are as follows:
1. Organization of Information
The task asks students to organize, synthesize, interpret, explain, or evaluate complex information in addressing a concept, problem or issue.
2. Consideration of Alternatives
The task asks students to consider alternative solutions, strategies, perspectives, or points of view in addressing a concept, problem or issue.
3. Disciplinary Content
The task asks students to show understanding and/or use ideas, theories, or perspectives considered central to an academic or professional discipline.
4. Disciplinary Process
The task asks students to use methods of inquiry, research, or communication characteristic of an academic or professional discipline.
5. Elaborated Written Communication
The task asks students to elaborate on their understanding, explanations, or conclusions through extended writing.
